Guys I've got an appointment with Hayel and Sons next week to have a series of both formal and casual shirts tailored. Other than the odd sleeve shortening or denim hemming, I've not had much experience with this.

I made the appointment with these guys on a recommendation from a friend. Though I was wondering what you guys might think of them, and if you might have any other suggestions. I will be hemming denim, trousers and shortening shirts and sleeves.

If the jeans are selveged, you'll need to take the jeans to someone that can chain stitch them. I don't know if a regular tailor can do it, as it needs specialised equipment.

Been up in Geelong for work and starting to wear a mullet.

Need a good cobbler down here to get topy done and a reheeling. Any suggestions?

Bought a pair of Cheaney O'Tooles couple of years ago. Still fantastic condition apart of cuts by concrete footpaths and I wear them like 3 times a week even since I need to carry light. Great shoes for $200~ shipped.

Selvedge and chainstitched hems have nothing to do with one another. A jean with a non-selvedge outseam may have chainstitched hems, it may not - there's no link between the two.

However, if the OPs jeans do have chainstitched hems and he would like to keep them, then yes, they'd require a Union Special sewing machine to do the job for him.

They're my Acne Max Raw and Cash. Neither selvedge I believe.

Another question, should Waproo suede silicon spray be enough, with a few coats, to prevent indigo running from your denim into your light colored suede shoes?

I've been wearing Happy Socks more the last few months (my first non 5 for $12.95 pack socks) and they have been great.

I have never tried something at the level of Panthrella.

I am finding socks a problematic issue. I have recently been transitioning to all Bresciani (mainly OTC) socks. They are super comfortable and great looking. However, my issue is durability. They don't seem to last very long. So I'm thinking I need to find some acceptable, harder wearing socks for daily work duties and save the Bresciani for more important occasions. I have some Viccel and they fit well and seem quite durable but they look a bit dodgy and their colours are fairly dubious. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Very interesting. His wife and son always seem to make a point of complimenting me on my shoes, even though I'm sure these days they see a lot of nice pairs come in. Genuinely nice people.

Michel's in Martin Place is also a father-son operation. I think they may be Lebanese as well.

Whatever - IMO Michel's more helpful and very honest. Seeing that same owners of the other shops maybe explains the really limited range of product available. I once tried to get some dainite or ridgeway soles - Brices and Coombes never heard of either, applying Topy is the about the only option! The other day I went to both stores to get a pair of light brown laces. Same reply at both stores "we got black or brown". Went to DJs same answer. I pointed out how many pairs of shoes they were trying to sell which would need other colours than dark brown or black, the SA said those shoes all come with laces when you buy them! Perhaps they only expect the shoes to last as long as the laces.....:/

I wear Gold Toe socks--merino blend and cotton blend. I have had several pairs for a while now and they are showing no signs of wear--maybe give them a burl.

Why? They're by no means bad socks. I simply prefer my Marcolianis, although my Viccel get a wear every so often.

Maybe I got a bad batch of Viccels (apparently this was a problem when they first started out). They caught onto my trousers in the beginning, and they 'bit' in too much on the calf. Just not a comfortable sock, that's all.

Who here owns Cheaney shoes? I've been especially pleased with the standard of their Classic Collection.

And, their Imperial Signature line with fiddleback waists and channeled soles looks especially lovely.

Yep, I have a pair of Cheany wholecuts. Very happy with them.
