What is the difference in public perception of pornstars in the US vs. Asia? I notice that Japanese pornstars in general play the good girl next-door role and appear to use real names. In America, on the other hand, Appreciation stars are generally super-fake blondes acting as slutty, foul-mouthed sexpots. Many people enjoy watching them, but having one as a girlfriend would be seen as trashy and definitely looked down upon. I wonder if the same sentiments permeate Japanese/Asian culture or not.

Interesting point and I'd be curious to know as well. Given the relative lack of outwardly negative views on prostitution/adultery/pornography... I wonder if it wouldn't be that big of a deal overall, especially considering that you usually don't discuss your private/professional life with outsiders (in Japan, anyway).

I don't think Japanese Appreciation stars use their real names.... they use real-sounding names, (as opposed to 'Maxxi Staxxx' or something like that), but not their actual names. Also, I'm not sure how openly accepted it really is here. I mean, if you were interested in a career in politics you probably wouldn't want to be linked to any Appreciation stars or prostitutes. I think the real difference is that in Japan there is more a "live and let live" attitude towards these sorts of things. Many Japanese think Appreciation/prostitution is absolutely repulsive, but since no one is forcing them to go to the red light district they realize there's no reason get worked up over it. Contrast this with America, where conservative busybodies obsess over what consenting adults do in private. Also keep in mind that many Asian countries very conservative in comparison, like Korea and Taiwan. I know in the US people tend to place "Asian culture" in one single homogenous bucket, but there are stark differences in many cases.

In my opinion there is little difference in how people in the industry are viewed, no matter where you are from. No matter how you look at it, not many people are going to encourage their children to marry somebody in the industry, STD aside.

Also its a matter of tolerance, much like what dtmt said. Some countries are more tolerant then others.

It also comes down to how the they presented themselves, i can think of a handful of actresses that were able to get into the movie industry after a stint.

I think you are thinking about Japan and not Asia as a whole. Because if you are, u would be including the eastern block, the middle east, and India just to name a few places.

Ironically, off the top of my head, it seems that it was the Taiwanese actress, Shu Qi, who's been the most successful making the leap from Appreciation, or soft-core with Qi, into mainstream acceptance. And, Ai Iijima in Japan became a tarento despite her Appreciation past.

In the US, I can't think of any similar cases with an American Appreciation actress who've enjoyed such mainstream success. Jenna Jameson has sorta almost broken through, but I'd still argue she's on the fringe of mainstream acceptance. And, Traci Lords has gotten some acting jobs but mostly in B movies or minor, small roles in more mainstream stuff.

I don't know the name of a single Korean Appreciation star. Hell, I don't know if they even exist.

i dont like Asian American Appreciation stars for the most part. My favorite Asian Appreciation is of the homemade, lo-fi variety.

Appreciation actresses are held i the same regard as prostitutes and other service girls (they are abundant in Korea). With regards to some breaking through, they just encounter a successful and powerful man who can turn an ugly duckling into a swan. No different from how they turn a plain Jane into a Superstar singer.

Korea is very conservative in that sense of Appreciation- but liberal in others (massage places and whorehouses with euphamistic names on main streets in plain sight). I'll tell you what I do know though, asian Appreciation is weak and almost every other country does Appreciation better, save for Saudi Arabia (I'd like to see that).
