Athens rules. You can't beat The Mall, Ermou, Glyfada, etc.

Oh, and Syndagma FTW.
Islands can be overrated though.

Athens sucks. The people there are horrible. Greece is barely a shadow of what it once was. At least the food is good.

I'm Greek and I feel no pride when I visit Athens. It's like a dumpster of manpri wearing con-artists.

How could I forget the food? Souvlaki PWNS.

Some parts of Omonia remind me of a dumpster, yeah. :\\

Help me remember the name of this place. I was working in Athens a few years ago, and a bunch of my colleagues had gone one night to this gigantic club that apparently went on for blocks, and was essentially outdoors, from the way they described it. They were all very impressed by the scale and craziness of it, and I got the impression it was a famous must-do kind of place.

Anyone know the place I'm talking about? I always wanted to check it out if I got back there.

Anyway, I thought Athens was a big, grimy, somewhat nasty city, but really weird and cool, too. I didn't have a lot of free time while I was there, so just scratched the surface. I did eat a couple times at this rooftop place called Strophi (sp?) that was really good, and had a view looking right up at the Parthenon, which was all lit up right over our heads. Real odd little hole in the wall place. But I looked at the pictures on the wall that typically show the owner of the restaurant with minor celebrities, and there was a shot of him with Gorbachev, so it has some international creds, apparently.

The Acropolis is a must-see-in-your-lifetime sort of thing, too.

Athens was definitely a worthwhile experience. And the Greek islands are probably the most stunningly beautiful places I've seen in my life.

I love Athens - have been there twice and I'm going back later this month. People who think of it as a "dirty" or "grimy" city might be surprised if they haven't been there in a few years - the city is entirely different now than it was in 1999. It's not pristine by any means but it's less dirty than Rome or Amsterdam IMO.

Forgot to mention that Kolonaki is a pretty great place to shop and the cafes are exquisite.

I stopped over there for half a day a couple of months ago. I obviously didn't get much time for shopping or anything but I was not amazed by city's beauty, that is for certain. The Plaka had its charm and I managed to find a non-touristy cafÃ

that was nice. I don't think it would be my go-to destination for a long trip though.
