At a Loss....Unpleasant experience at Peppino's

so i stopped in today to pick up 2 suits that i was having altered at Peppino's where i have been going for some time now. When i was looking them over to check on everything i noticed that the vents were sewn shut. I am methodical about only wearing suits with either side vents or a center vent -and when i asked him why (i was obviously annoyed) his response was only- "well you must have asked that we sew them shut." when i told him that was definitely not the case he just coninued to insist that they would not have done the work oterwise - and even when i asked to see the slip there was nothing on it but the total price. He then said there was no way for it to be undone (which i knew) and then just asked for his $187 dollars.

This is particlarly upsetting becasue of the fact that i had perviously had such good experiences there - now i can say for certain i will not be going back.

Oh, man! I feel for you. I can't believe they made you pay for the work when something irreversible had been done to the suits.

I wonder whether the guy realizes how much business he just lost.

I certainly won't be going on recommendation, as I had almost before leaving NYC in late January.

How is it that sewing vents shut cannot be undone?

I was also planning on taking some of my best suits there for alterations I've been putting off (Oxxford, Dunheel, Corneliani), but it now looks like I will be looking elsewhere. How disappointing. It's one thing to be gruff and all business, but that sounds like just bad business. Sorry to hear about your experience; that sounds awful.

If I am not mistaken, some fabric needs to be cut from each vent end. I used Peppino's once and I had a good experience. I noticed that most of the people there are less than fluent in english and I made sure that everything I wanted was very clearly understood by them. That being said, they do not write down what you ask to get done anywhere and I have to believe that it would be very easy for them to make a mistake. Why they would make you pay for the work is absolutely beyond me.

Why the **** won't tailors write things down? WHY? My tailor has yet to make a mistake, but she refuses to write things down.

I also use Peppino, but I always insist that they write down what I want on a small piece of paper which gets pinned onto the part of the suit being altered. I never get any misunderstanding this way. He's brusque but he'd listen and do what you want if you insist.

What a prick. I actually type up my exact instructions and have them clip it to the receipt of work with a digital copy on the paper of the actual zipper and buttons. On 2 occasions brand new suits had the buttons chipped and the zipper broken and they insisted it was not their fault. THis was there is no question.

Who is this guy....the freakin' "suit nazi"? It isn't a question of the $187...he should be replacing the jackets. If you took your BMW to the shop for an oil change....and they "pimped your ride" into a pick up truck...would you pay the bill and walk away?

With that kind of attitude Mr. Peppino would have been eating said jackets.....literally...buttons and all.

I have also had good experiences with them and only so-so experiences with Bhambi. I think I'm going to stick with Peppino for my next alteration and keep my finger crossed.

I would've raised ******* hell too. You guys are too nice. Jay and I are in the sartorial "collection" business, btw. East Coast, of course. Props to Tokyo for his West Coast operation. We're cool that way.

"Suit nazi..." That's funny! I just thought of a gruff guy behind the counter yelling "No suit for you!"

As for replacement, he'd actually have to go farther and replace the entire suit. Unless these suits were brand new, the color would have shifted slightly. Even if new, sometimes there is a slight variation from one batch of fabric to another, and mylesmyles shouldn't have to put up with even slight variation.
