We dated for a few months and ended it amicably as we were both in different colleges.

Moral of the story is that my best friend is still my best friend and I still get along great with his sister when I see her (and she's even hotter now). I think it comes down to the kind of person your friend is with regards to getting permission to pursue his sister, but I think if I had to do it over again I'd come up with one hell of an exit strategy if things weren't working out unless I wanted to lose a friend. I've dated cousins of friends that have gotten me into a hell of a lot more trouble than they were ever worth.

How close a friend?

I say tell him first as a courtesy, and be prepared for awkwardness if it doesnt work out though.

Current (for the past 5 years..) girlfriend with whom I am living is the sister of a friend. I don't see any problems if (and as) you don't intend to beat her or something.
