Ascot Chang SUIT quality?

This may sound strange, but I was informed by a colleague that Ascot Chang has a branch in Manila and that they can make you suits. Has anyone heard anything to this effect and if so, what would the quality be like?

I've heard about Ascot Chang offering suits in their HK stores. My understanding is that they are actually done by William Yu or Gordon Yao (both big and respected names in HK tailoring, like WW Chan). The prices are near to what WW Chan charges. Never seen a finished product, however.

I use Gordon Yao and his quality is excellent.

I believe that Chang does indeed contract suit manufacture to him and that on visits to the USA in the fall Gordon actually accompnies the trip.

To clarify, would these Ascot Chang suits be comparable to Chan?

I believe the workmanship would, but other points are depedent on the quality of your fitter.

I remember you (Josepidal) mentioning there were nobody tailoring fully canvassed suits over where you were. If the Ascot suits are like the ones they have in HK, they will be fully canvassed as well. Gluck

Bear in mind that, for AC suits, you will probably be measured and fitted not by a cutter (of suits) but a shirtmaker instead. I'm not sure how (or if) that affects the end result.

On the other hand, Chan shirts are measured and fitted by a suit cutter and seems to be ok.

I am unaware what goes on in Manilla but Gordon Yao personally goes to the US each Autumn with the Chiang roadshow.

There is no diference beween a Chan suit and a Yao when bought in HK. Both fully canvassed and excellent.

The construction of Yu suits is quite good as well. Yu also has an office in NYC.

I know. Apologies, but I was made to believe that Ascot Chang Manila had long since closed down and that in any case it made nothing but shirts.

Now I'm curious.

I called the Ascot Chang Manila branch and missed the manager, but was told their average suits sell for about USD600, made of 100s or 110s Italian Vitale fabric, and supposedly fully canvassed. The guy explained they don't glue wool to the canvas but really stitch it, so that might be true.

If this is true, might an AC Manila suit be a good starter suit?

Yes; also see if they have any cloth with a lower thread count (80s or something) if it's a starter suit. Actually visit the shop and inspect finished coats to see if the chestpiece is canvassed.
