For years, the allure of that too-cool-for-school little shop downtown was that only you and your best friends knew about it. But these days, no one can afford to be that exclusive
It focuses on a few shops in NYC, but I thought it was interesting. I've been hearing similar successful results from local stores here in the pacific NW as well.

I told one Styleforum approved retailer to get a webstore in 2004, and was told the usual "Well, no, that's not us. We focus of customer service, etc... etc..." Three years later - a webstore.
Some innovators do comparable or more business online then in their B&Ms. Classical economists should approve of this development, which is arguably a step towards the ideal market.

There's a store that I keep an eye on that is bucking all the trends: no webstore, no mark downs, no diversified brand offerings.

**** the man.

^ There is also one "not-approved" SF retailer that went fully online 2 years ago (and closed their retail stores) and they do several million a year.

It makes sense. Saves a lot on synchinng B&M and online inventory, and fulfillment becomes much more streamlined. Still, if it is who I think it is, I hope that their dicks rot off.
