Any fans? I recently acquired his Village Vanguard recordings and they're really great. The guy plays a mean alto sax in these sessions, and it's a nice contrast to his earlier more "contemplative" (read: gentler) stuff. It's not so different from later Evans recordings; like Bill, Pepper probably knew he didn't have a lot of time left and gives everything he has in these performances. Sort of a final proving ground, if you will. Like many of the jazz greats he fell victim to addiction but at least he left us with some magical music.

Pepper's impassioned playing on "Saturday Night at the Village Vanguard" is not to be missed, l particularly the closign track For Freddie. What a great musician.

I like all of his albums. Look for the Fantasy Records SACD remasters. I believe they have a CD layer as well.

Art Pepper Plus Eleven is one of my favorites. Great jazz big band sound.

Another great but somewhat obscure Art Pepper record is with Chet Baker. It was originally called "Playboys" and had a playboy bunny on the cover. When Hef threatened to sue, the label (Pacific Jazz) changed the name to "Picture of Heath."

It's mostly Jimmy Heath compositions, and Chet's on fire on this date. I just got the Audiophile reissue LP from Pure Pleasure Records, and wow, the sound quality is awesome.

There's another nice AP/CB (or is it CB/AP?) record called "the Route"...

"Friday Night at the Village Vanguard" is something else.

This is a guy who knew he was dying and, like Bill Evans, gave it his all.

Never forgotten, Art. You were a virtuoso......

If anyone has the good fortune of owning Art's 9-disc stand at the Vanguard in 1977 (one of the best live jazz sets ever), check out his takes on 'Cherokee.' God damn, just genius! Art was the man.

I hate falling into your traps of sensationalist bullshit, but I'll have to give it a listen. And does it make you cry?

Yes it's made me cry, sober and drunk. It's treanscendent; Pepper plays with a maddened passion that mirrors late Evans recordings. It's really thrilling.

No, photos of atom bombs make Conne cry. He's like Mila Jovovich's too-pure-for-this-world naif character in The Fifth Element, only wretchedly unattractive.

Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section is a superlative record with a fascinating back-story.
