Giorgio's comments are as cheaply made as his $2K Le Collezioni suits.

He's been coasting since American Gigolo.

He actually wrote to the Times to clarify his remarks - see this thread at Ask Andy's:

I have the greatest respect for Savile Row, which for two centuries has been a pinnacle of excellence for men’s tailoring.

My intention is to create a different kind of excellence, that reflects my personal aesthetic of bringing the traditional and the modern together, building on the best of both, while respecting the craft that Savile Row has for so long made its own.

I was surprised by the way John Arlidge portrayed my point of view as he has interviewed me on many occasions and knows me and my philosophy well.

First, what was said about Savile Row was provoked by Arlidge himself. When I spoke of it being like a “commedia”, it was meant in a nostalgic theatrical sense in that its heritage and notoriety are linked to the past. That was my meaning. No offence intended.

I much regret that my remarks were misunderstood and presented in such a way as to make it seem that I was attacking Savile Row, which I have no wish to do. There is plenty of room for us both.

Of course, anyone with a security issue might react to the words of the Milanese. But if you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.

I have to admit, I like some of the things that Armani labels carry, but the comment that he made about Savile Row was totally childish. I wonder what motivated him to say sh!t like that? I am surprised that he did not say something like, "My couture line will eventually put Kiton and Brioni out of business as well."

Why is he keep saying "technology"? Is he planning to make $10,000 bespoke suit that is fused? I am sorry, but associating the word, "technology" with "couture" is oxymoron IMHO.

Take him "out" as in "on a date?" No thanks.

The funniest thing is that he says this...
When I think of Savile Row I picture a man in an old black and white English film. He is living in the country. He has a butler. He smokes a cigar sitting in an old-fashioned Prince of Wales check suit.
... when perhaps the most famous picture of him features him looking like a muppet wearing ... an old-fashioned PoW check suit, with the trousers pulled up to his **** and a turtlneck. LOL.

I believe you're thinking of a picture of Ralph Lauren. I can't find it now, of course.

I always thought Armani's forte was marketing. The man knows his audience. And if I recall the quote correctly, "No one ever went broke underestimating the public's tastes" (please forgive the inaccuracy)

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
