Fairly new to the forum, I've been looking for advice on buying a new suit, and everyone is suggesting brands like brooks brothers, ralph lauren... but no one talks about Hugo Boss or Armani. Is there a reason for this? I'm sure you'll say 'wear whatever u like...', but let me know your opinions, good or bad. thanks.

^Do a forum search, Armani and Boss are discussed plenty, but really there isn't a lot to recommend in them for the retail prices being asked. Both are excellent MARKETING successes, if not Sartorial ones.

Short answer is that they aren't bad suits as such, it's just that they charge a gigantic premium for the name and so put out a entry-level/mid-range suit with a premium price tag. So, that $1700 Armani Collezioni suit might be about the same as a $800 suit from a lesser-known maker, with similar quality. Likewise, a $1000 Boss suit probably won't hold up to much wear and tear, though the silhouette can be nice on some guys. If you find NWT Boss on sale for less than $300 and Armani for less than $500, assuming they fit you well and you like them, I'd say go for it.

Half price for either one (meaning $500+ for Boss or $700+ for Armani Collezioni) probably I'd pass.
