Hello All,
This is my first post so go easy. I've had a search but couldn't find anything recent on the subject... If there is then apologies!

I have the classic problem of requiring a 20-21" jacket across the shoulders but a 42" chest and 36-37" waist. I've tried many many different designers but really struggling to find a suit that fits my shoulders without the dreaded divot. Im not fancying bespoke or MTM at this stage, so could you good fellows recommend me some designers that cater for the above? My tailor suggested Tommy Hilfiger cut their suits more generous on the shoulders but I have no experience of their ranges.

At the moment I'm having to buy 44" and above jackets just to have wide enough shoulders but there's only so far they can be tailored in before the lapels start to crease or the pockets hit the seam line :-(

Thank you

In my opinion, that is not a problem you are not going to solve off the rack. As you say, there is only so much that even a good alterations tailor can do before the balance of a jacket is thrown off.

I'd suggest two ways to proceed. One, MTM or, better, bespoke. Sooner or later you will have to face the fact that RTW is a compromise. Two, explore the second hand market. eBay, here on StyFo, or thrift. Look for jackets that fit properly across the shoulders then have them altered. You can afford to take chances when you're paying pennies in the dollar and you will learn what can and cannot be done.

Hi Andy, thanks for the reply.
The later is what I'm doing at the moment, I've bought numerous suits from eBay and them altered but none are quite right. It's a shame as I've recently had to sell a Zegna made suit (gorgeous fabric) and a lovely fully canvassed Georgio Armani and a Canali suit all because of the damned shoulders.
I guess I'm just trying to delay the inevitable ££££ on a custom job
