Are you happy with the quality of your suit alterations?

I have a great hickey freeman suit ebay find that I've worn for about a year and a half now, but now that I know a bit more about how things should fit I definitely would like more waist suppression and am considering getting it cut up.

I am very thin but the suit fit's me perfectly in the shoulders and I want to take advantage of my thinness - i'd like it to look less like a sack when I button up as well. It's a 41L

I've had some tailoring done in the past and it's looked really bad. (A single vent suit coat that was too big for me taken in from the middle of the back that just looked awful)

Are you happy with alternations to the suit shape that you've had done? Do you really have local tailors rip into your expensive fine clothing?

I have an isaia sportcoat I bought that i'm considering the same treatment for.

the only time a back is taken in, is when the back is too big.
sounds like the sides should be taken in on your HF.

Don't go in blind. Get opinions. Ask the tailor for references and call them.

Being local isn't a negative. Being a bad tailor is.

Yes. And no. It completely depends on the local tailor. I've seen guys in strip malls who could make you a suit by hand and others in expensive zip codes who are butchers. Given your proximity to San Francisco, you might want to search the forum for or ask about tailors there. I'm sure there's a bunch.

If you can't get a rec, then the only way to tell is by trying. Start w/ something simple and small, like taking in the waist or hemming a pair of pants and see what the work looks like. And you shouldn't be afraid to ask how the tailor intends to do the job--if you ask, he should be willing to explain where he will take it in and how much. If the chalk markings don't make sense to you, you could also ask him to pin it for you while you're in the shop so you can get a feel for what he plans to do.

If all else fails, it the suit is solid wool, another tailor should be able to let it out again.

i got the sweetest deal on the planet. my mums a pro dressmaker and i get her to tailor all my ****
