Are you a serial retail returner?

The Boston Globe has a story about consumers who purchase items with the full intention of returning the items for a refund. These serial returners don't buy merchandise so much as "rent" them. According to the article return fraud costs retailers billions of dollars a year because the goods can not longer be sold as new and either must be sold at a discount or discarded.

Are you a retail renter and would you look down on those who do stuff?

I am not one, and I dont see the point in people who do it. Whats the point, so others can see you wearing something different everytime? How do you get suits altered or pants hemmed?

I've only ever returned 1 thing (cologne I purchased and got as a gift shortly after) and exchanged 1 thing (for a different size).

Some stores will monitor customer returns and ban certain customers from shopping there.

I know someone that buys everything she wants on instinct and will then consider her purchases when she gets home and return what she doesn't want.

99% of women shop like that.

That's what my wife does. She buys a bunch of stuff (doesn't wear it), considers it at home, then returns it a day or two later. It drives me crazy, although in all fairness to her, she usually has two little kids with her and it's difficult to try things on undisturbed.

what about buying things just to try them on so you can wait till later down the line (ie sale time) and get them cheaper

Who buys something to try it on? lol. I normally use fitting rooms for things like that.

I return about 1/3 of things I buy. I tend to buy on impulse and feel free to reconsider when I have the clothing at home. I'll often let it hang in the closet for a couple of days and try it on at home without the lights and salesmen.

I don't ever return anything that can't be resold.

Buying and returning is a waste of time, I almost always wait before buying to make sure I want something.
