Are V-collar pullovers the modern alternative to waistcoats?

    What do you think?
    Are pullovers formal enough?
Are they ok with a suit?
Are they the perfect way to hide your belly zone under the jacket's button?

A pullover is fine with a sport coat. With a suit, a waistcoat usually looks best.

    wise words

anyway for what I'm reading in the thread "Do you care how your coworkers dress? Does the decline of formality of dress bother you?" the general tendency is not to wear suits even at work

Pullovers are far more casual than a waistcoat IMO. While a waistcoat serves to generally make an outfit more formal than it would be without the waistcoat, a pullover to me makes an outfit more casual. Oftentimes with the right odd jacket, both more elegant and more casual, but nonetheless, more casual. So I don't think they're a replacement so much as an alternative style that can work well in some circumstances.

Both will keep you a bit warmer than you would be otherwise.

Yes, v-neck sweaters look nice with jackets. I like the combo. I also like vests; I wore one yesterday without a jacket.

This is true. A pullover can work with a tweed suit, but looks incongruous with a city/business suit.

They are not formal enough with a business suit. They are okay with tweed suits and with sports coats, but I'm I'm going to wear something between my jacket and shirt I prefer a waistcoat. A jumper is too bulky.

If your "belly zone" shows below your jacket that's another problem. It means your trousers need a higher rise or your jacket's button stance is too high. Nothing should be showing there.
