Just picked these up on ebay. Most of the writing on the interior is gone, but there is a handwritten '2255' in the right shoe. Says 'Bench Made in England' as you can likely see, also 'Polo' on the sole. Are they C&Js? Model name?

I would guess yes, Alan. Very nice shoes, back from when the Polo shoes were really hitting their stride (oh, that does sound hackneyed, doesn't it?). One thing in particular I like about the shoes is the way the soles harmonize with the uppers--not too high a contrast. A classic design in great condition; I'll bet with a little work they will look amazing.

Nice job, Alan. They've got a real glow to them. A great pair of shoes. I must say, though, I prefer the original laces--much more Brideshead Revisited (must be the social conservative in me talking!).

You think so? I had assumed they were non-original to the shoes. Hmmm...

I like them with ribbon laces too.

Those really are just beautiful, Alan. I do prefer the wider laces--gives the shoe that little extra bit of flounce. It's instructive to see the side-by-side comparison. To my eye, the thin lace is all business and adds a jarring (and un-necessary) note of contrast. The ribbon lace, otoh, just yawns like a true gentleman of leisure, using that wonderful complementary color to sink gracefully into the shoe. So I guess the real question is, Are you a go-getter or an Oblomov?

I type this from my bed so...

Actually, I hope to use the shoes in a more casual way, and I think you may be right that the ribbon laces give it that more laid back air that I was after.

Becoming more convinced.
