Are these blazers or suit jackets?

And does it really matter with these styles?

(Both offered on eBay as blazers, but I do wonder if sellers sometimes try and pass off orphaned jackets or trousers as separates.)

I’m my opinion, they both look like orphaned suit jackets.

swap out the navy buttons for brown or grey and you could pass the navy jacket as a sport coat.

The second coat has just enough patterning to it that you could pass it off as well, but for me that’s borderline and I’d pass.

Agreed.

The blue is 100% a suit jacket. I can't for sure say that check was "meant" to be a suit jacket, but it looks like one. The buttons are dead giveaways.

The defining rule is that matching pants exist. If you can't find matching pants for them, they are, as far as you're concerned, blazers.

That said, the navy one would make a pretty bad blazer. Like others said, navy buttons mean zero contrast. Flap pockets are kinda stiff for a blazer (although I have one flap pocket blazer I like).

The grey one, if you like it, would be fine as a blazer. Still has flap pockets... the button stance looks pretty low... But it's a lighter color and a pattern and the buttons visibly contrast. So that's all in your favor. You could do better, though.
