Are there really any consequences of wearing a black suit?

I would say there are no consequences unless one is in the elite of society. And by the time one reaches the elite, one *knows* that one shouldn't wear black suits.

People get analyst interviews all the time wearing black suits, but somewhere along the line to associate their mentors will let it slip to them they should start dressing better, for example.

That's why it's so egregious when rich athletes wear black suits/inappropriately sized suits/suits with labels still on the sleeves (!). They have money and women, but they are not really part of the cultural elite. And if you think about it, the women they marry are hot, but aren't really "elite" women. I couldn't see Al Gore or G.W.'s daughters marrying black-suit wearers, to tell the truth. They seem to have married people (one a Taiwanese-American businessman, the other a Virginia lawyer) who were part of the cultural elite.

The only consequence of wearing a black suit is that you're wearing a black suit.

In all seriousness, I'd imagine there are extremely few situations in which wearing a black suit would be inappropriate (as opposed to another suit). I was going to suggest the case of applying for a fashion design/executive position, but in that case you'd probably be equally questioned ans respected (for breaking the rules).

If I was a dictator men in black suits would be summarily tried and placed in front of a firing squad. How is that for consequence?

It's a class C misdemeanor in some locales.

But it's just a slight fine and no jail time, so no big thing at all.

Let me put it this way; are there any consequences to wearing square-toed shoes?

When I become dictator, I plan to employ many men in black suits in my security forces.

Pray we never meet.

I would look at the doctor and think: "Ok, how often does he go to funerals?"

Would I not hire someone for wearing a black suit to the interview? No. From my personal experience, the only people that do that are recent college/university graduates that wanted to 'dress appropriately' and someone told them to get a black suit. It's usually the first suit they have owned and didnt know better.

It's generally understood that, for interviews, you wear grey or navy blue. Most people still wear a white shirt to an interview. After people have worked for a while, they tend to understand that black suits are considered too 'formal' for the workplace.

If you are stepping out at night with your lady and she is wearing a black cocktail dress wouldn't it be appropriate for a man to wear a black suit?
