No, I'm being serious. The idea popped into my head after examining my day to day interactions with others. I hardly ever see anyone come close to the attention to the level of fit and finish which is routinely displayed in the WAYWN thread ( iammatt, Vox, bmulford, PG just off the top of head). I'm even more convinced after browsing a few of the "Best Dressed" lists like such: http://www.vanityfair.com/style/feat...lideshow200809 Is this really an exaggeration?

I tend to agree with you.

I'm JV as far as SF goes, but PG, Vox, Cravatte, iammatt, maomao, et al bring it 100% on a daily basis.

Looking at that list, I agree with the choice of Matt Lauer. That guy's clothes fit him very well and he wears great looking shoes.

I like it like this.. Not that I am a attention ho!

But life would be weird if everyone was well dressed.. Sort of like good looking women, I still get weak in my knees (due to the swelling of my mongrel!)..

Nah, just the nerdiest-well-dressed-men. I've seem some greatly stylish men out there that wouldn't want to be on WAYWT or couldn't be bothered to

If SF was the last final word on how far a man can go in style and dress then I would be very, very sad. Not to disparage SF, which has some very stylish and unique folks, but It's a big world out there and it's good to strive to swim with ever bigger fish.

I've had the same thoughts. I think it would be really hard for any American man to learn everything you can learn here through trial and error in the real world.

In Europe though, and especially Italy, it seems like men just know how to dress and I'm sure few have ever heard of SF. I'm not exactly sure if they're necessarily more knowledgeable or just have better access to high quality goods.

The issue is that a StyleForum poster's standard of judging well-dressed people is a StyleForum sensibility. If one uses a StyleForum sensibility as one's lens, then of course the people on StyleForum will appear to be the most correct and well-dressed.

Who knows.

They could be lurking.

Or only posting in a way that does not give away their identity.

People's taste have fragmented enough that I'm not sure you could even pinpoint those anyway. What's the point. I like looking at suited dudes but it is not my primary interest and for a lot of people it is not an interest at all...

They just have eyes, that they use to look at people - their fathers, uncles, other people on the street. People dress like others around them and before them. That's why French women and Italian men dress relatively well - they just look around.

Now, if you're a kid growing up in the US, what do you have to look at to create that norm in your head of how men should dress, how clothes should fit?

I think SFers dress well, but generally speaking are not the best dressed men in the world. The best dressed men tend to take real sartorial risks, mixing and matching in ways that are often unusual and sometimes even enlightening.

There is a strong conservative aesthetic that dominates StyleForum, and this adherence to historical tradition/propriety usually limits how far SFers are willing to stretch their imaginations.

Perhaps the best example of this is when a truly radical picture pops up on the Sartorialist. Many SFers fall over themselves over a well-cut suit and pocket square, but hate on guys who push the envelope (like the black guy with slouchy khaki pants and vest). The former is elegant, but safe; the latter is simply inspirational.
