I need a decent shoe for work and interviews, I'm currently an Engineering Intern in a small town where most people can't tell the difference between Alden and Aldo making a fat $10 an hour. I want to buy as nice of shoe as possible, preferably Allen Edmonds Sheltons but I really can't swing the cost right now.

I'm looking at the Florsheim Markham limited and there is obviously a HUGE difference in quality between the two shoes, but are they at least worth $120???

The job I'm interview for pays around $45,000 per year so I'm still going to be poor compared to most of you guys, but maybe I can afford the AE's later? Oh Yeah I forgot it's still taboo to talk about money, but I want you to realize what my peers and I can afford.

Any suggestions besides Ebay? I wear a 13 if anyone has AE's in a brown that are in good condition and affordable.

If you are going to buy a pair of shoes to wear to work regardless of the maker do not buy saddle shoes. Buy captoes.

I realize saddle shoes are a casual shoe, but my boss wears f-ing Keen Sandles to work, so Saddles shoes around here are HIGH CLASS. I like cap toes, but they are a little too classy for going to job-sites and working with maintenance folk. I live in a real cow town.

just forget those.

AE has a sale on, so does nordstrom.

You can get AE cliftons for $200 that are worlds better than the florsheim u posted.

If you can wait there is often a 2 for $200 sale by an Allen Edmond outlet. I do not have the details but maybe someone can give you the number/ location. I have heard that these shoes may be seconds/ discontinued lines, but the quality should be fine.

And as for the shoe in your link, as the guy said don't buy saddle shoes to office.

Regardless of what people in your office are wearing you are young, just starting to work and you should build a nice wardrobe from the fundamentals. After you have three pairs of nice work shoes, then get casual stuff. If you buy those you will be sorry down the line. Trust me.

Are there good resources on what I should select as my fundamental wardrobe pieces? I can't imagine buying more than $1000 worth of clothing over the next 3 or 4 months (and that's if land a good job). Keep in mind how Engineers dress, I want to be the sharpest dressed but I don't want to make people peg me as a douchy lawyer or banker.

Hi. I am a banker, and not a douche. I received my bachelor's degree from a school with several very highly rated engineering programs (re: top 5 per US News). Several of the engineering students I knew were complete tools. Glad we got that straight.

Now back to the issue at hand. In my line of work, business casual is normal but I often get compliments when elevating my level of dress. I enjoy doing so because it makes me feel good and helps my confidence to dress well. I have to do construction site inspections at times, and get saw dust and drywall dust on my shoes, but I keep a bottle of water and a clean cotton cloth to wipe off the uppers once I get back to my car.

Nice. :marchal: If you don't want people to peg you as a douche, don't wear the saddle shoes. Also, you need more than one pair of shoes.

Agreed with all the above posts, no saddle shoes. Florsheim Limited does happen to make a longwing that should fit your budget, is a classic style, and is currently trendy without being too fashion forward. Depending on the leather, you could easily wear it with "office pants" and denim.

I would also check out some decent penny loafers. Bass Weejuns aren't the best quality, but they're cheap when on sale and you could probably find some better quality versions online.

Do you like the Veblen more than the Kenmoor??? The Kenmoor looks a lot nicer in pics than the Veblen, too me. I wish I had the experience and knowledge of high quality shoes that most of you have. Maybe I should just join the rest of my coworkers and wear hiking boots and wranglers???
