slight bootcuts are good, just like slight tapers. too far deviation from the straight leg is where it starts getting ugly.

You got any actual experience to back that up?? A well executed bootcut is infinitely more flattering on a bigger/heavier guy than 1947's and the hip flare that comes with them.
You must be sizing your 47's wrong if they give you hip flare. Mine are as slim my new standards in the top block and no sign of hipflare whatsoever.
