Are body weight exercises the fastest way to recover from injury?

I went under the knife to repair a torn Labrum a little over a year ago. I have now realized that body weight exercises may have been the key to a fast recovery. Obviously it took months to gain the ability to perform body weight exercises, but once I could perform sets of 6-8 on push ups, I slowly began working my way up to pull ups and dips. I am now at 100%, maybe even 110% and believe these exercises were the key to my recovery. Please share your recovery experiences.

Don't overwork yourself! Take it slowly so that you don't run your motivation into the ground.

I go for a walk as active recovery to get blood and nutrients to the muscles and speed up the recovery process. And I've been doing home workout programs with my body weight - http://homegym-exercises.com/bwe_bodyweight_exercises.html (that's what I'm using). They are designed to go 5 days per week, two of the 5 days being a "recovery workout", and then only two true rest days. I'm doing 2x 24 hour recovery periods as an integral part of the training.

Possibly, I had a fractured neck and started and continue to do body weight exercises.
