I was a hand model back in college. I used to split my time between classes and going to the studios for shoots. pay was great, no doubt about it, but my lifestyle was terrible. I don't want to brag but I got up in the hand model industry pretty quickly- getting exclusive contracts for jergens, neutrogena and irish spring. pretty soon though, the success got into my head- and all the partying and alcohol and drugs took its toll on my hands. by the time I was in my 3rd year of modelling all I could get were cheap knife infomercials, and I hate to admit this but I even had to resort to giving handjobs just to buy drugs. I'm glad I've straightened out though, after going through some programs and also finding my true love who accepted me for who I am.

You do have to be in a big city. Even the best agencies have open castings. You should call a few and ask what day/time they're at. Then find a decent emerging photographer who will shoot you for free since it will help their book as much as yours.

I was only full time for a year and a half working in Chicago, NYC, London, Milan, LA. Then did it part time while finishing college in Chicago. It is one of the best jobs a student can have.
