I'm considering buying a "four-season" wool suit in a khaki color, but I'll probably only do so if I can wear it to work next year. I'm moving to Texas (never lived there before) to work for a judge that requires us to wear suits everyday. Is this color of suit generally business appropriate down there? I know here in New York, it is not common to see, at least on white guys.

Would you be working in a courtroom? It is unlikely to be accepted there.

Frankly, it's best to ask the judge or a long-time employee whether the khaki color would be permitted. The adage here is, If in doubt, ask or do without.

I suspect it would be fine during the summer, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Having been down to the courthouse in Austin on a few occasions, I have never seen that color on any of the attorneys there. Other than the standard charcoal and navy the only "daring" color is light grey, which I think looks rather nice.

Depends a lot on how many suits in your rotation. If you will seldom need to wear it the better. It will be quite memorable to others how often you wear it because of the light color. Texas is hot. A 4 season cloth needs to be light weight there. It is mostly sunny, most of the time and lighter colors might work there more than in the northeast just because of the locale. Most important is to dress appropriately to the position you have. You might wait until you get there and see what the sartorial vibe is. Might make a better suit for social occasions rather than work.

get a 3 season (spring, summer, fall) suit in the standard, safe colors - navy, charcoal, dark to mid-grey. there's no such thing as winter as it's known in new york, in texas.

i wouldn't get anything in tan unless you've got the basics covered, and have a feel for the dress code in the courtroom. i would get light grey before tan if i was just getting one suit.

    are you clerking?

Can't speak to attorneys, but I've interacted with a fair number of business folks here in Texas--generally as conservative a bunch as the law talking guys--and I've seen a not insubstantial number wear khaki/tan suits.
