You've gotta see this movie. Regardless of what you think of his personal morals, one can't deny that Mel Gibson delivers the goods. It's a visually stunning movie...the attention to detail and sheer enormity of some of the sets make you wonder how many millions went into making this.

One of (if not the) best films of the year. Deserves a few Oscars IMO.

Anyone else see it yet?

Is there a narrative? I'm kind of interested. I may go see this.

I really want to see this. Originally I heard Mel didnt even want subtitles but that would have been ticket suicide.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by "goods". If I want that kind of excess, I find Terry Gilliam or even, say, Peter Greenaway more interesting. But I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Seeing a quasi-premiere special screening of "Showgirls" tonight, partially out of a sense of obligation (we're going as guests of a friend who was one of the producers or assistant producers or executive producers or something like that). The previews I've seen look ok, albeit hardly groundbreaking.

Jennifer Holliday's performance in Dreamgirls--especially her rendition of "And I'm Telling You" at the 1982 Tonys--can hardly be surpassed.

[OT]"The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover" came up in a Helen Mirren conversation at a party just last night -- have you seen it, and would you recommend? (Connemara, I know you're a big HM fan, so feel free to chip in as well...) Anyone else, of course, too... [/OT]

Oops, yes - "Dreamgirls", not "Showgirls". Better I get that straight in my head before seeing my head tonight. Thanks.

[OT again]Ah, "Dreamgirls" -- makes more sense now. The clip I heard this morning of Jennifer Hudson's version of the signature song pales in comparison to Jennifer Holliday's, and I fear the rest of the film will fall far short of the hype. Jamie Foxx is annoying in general, but I am curious to see Eddie Murphy, who's supposed to be quite good. [/OT again]

Lots of nudity, including by HM. Kind of a weird movie though.

Back on topic: I want to see Apocalypto, but since Gibson financed it himself and presumably is keeping most of the revenues, I'd feel bad about supporting anti-Semitism, however indirectly. Maybe I'll try for a bootleg DVD in Chinatown.

Cook the Thief is a great movie, one of Greenway's best. I remember seeing it in the theaters when it first came out and there would be screenings where a watcher would vomit during the film. It was reported that was a somewhat common occurence. The best HM nude scenes are in the phenomenal Excalibur, imo the best King Arthur movie ever made and yet to be surpassed.

If you're talking visually stunning, and Peter Greenaway, think The Tulse Luper Suitcases. First film series ever shot in digital. I was at the premiers (3 nights). It was the most stunning film I'd ever seen. Every detail was sublime. I urge anyone to go see this.
