Categories are not so simple as that. Sometimes, you just have stuff you like. Interior desecration is a state of mind.

Piob, I think we're actually having an influence on you. :slayer: I sometimes use antique or unique pottery in place of sculpture, so the side table with the pot is alright in my view. I also use side tables to hold smaller sculptures, so that is alright as well.

I do not have much in the way of these things and the reason can be summed up in one word: cats.

While fakeness and pretension are common ConTrad attributes, they are not necessary. A setting can be entirely without things pretending to be other things, yet be hopelessly ConTrad. ConTrad is more about a particular mindset: taste as defined by popular notions of fashionability and correctness. As you can imagine, that is extremely broad and lets in a lot of disparate things.

Case in point, a ConTrad room can have any number of your favorite Bauhaus things in it, or my Chair One, or my Nebula table. You cannot fend off ConTrad simply by having items that are high quality and themselves in good taste.

I take umbrage at the phrase "useless foo-foo stuff."

However, I disagree that useless foo-foo stuff has anything to do with defining ConTrad or is inherently in bad taste. People like stuff. People like to see and use that stuff. So, naturally, one expects any room or setting to have such stuff laying about.

The problem with foo-foo stuff in a ConTrad context is that it is either intrinsically bad foo-foo stuff or otherwise unobjectionable foo-foo stuff that has been purposely selected and arranged to demonstrate the owner's fashionability.

Don't believe the voices that rotely disparage coffee table books and the like. They are missing the key distinctions.

There are many ways to have an ugly house. Contrad it just one of them. There are also good contrad houses, much as foo might not believe it. ;)

So it's ambiguous enough that foo can call it ConTrad regardless of what it is, impart the negative connotation which he was worked to establish for ConTrad, and stand superior by comparison with whatever he calls his own non-ConTrad tastes.

The inferiority complex on this guy is unreal.

    Eww. No.

    Not possible.

You can say not all bad songs are Justin Bieber songs. Sure. But you cannot say that some Justin Bieber songs are good.

    My heart is broken.

Maybe the problem is that I didn't go to Princeton and then work in "Big IB"?

I could show you. Maybe not where I would want to live, but good.

Not that I am well versed in this, but wasn't it a hallmark of mid century modern to have all modern furnture but an "Oriental" (yes, you could still use that word then!) rug? So, why not get a classically pattered rug like a Bokara or a Herati?

Prediction: we will either go to war over such an example, or it will turn out it's not actually ConTrad.

You're not supposed to call them Oriental Rugs anymore? News to me...

It will have to be done on the down low. No public pics.
