That's a heavy kitchen island! But it's also spread out over maybe 30 square feet, and the table over only 8 square feet. I'd be concerned about the floor's ability to hold that up.

I don't know exactly why a countertop with a mitered edge on supports and a table with a mitered edge on supports would require more weight per square foot.

Ours had "Dartmouth" green shag in the sun room covering the original 1920's wooden floors.

I think green is better though orange can be good.

the most important thing about shag is that it must be ugly.

Or get a nice section of tree and split it lengthwise.

ok, i know this is foo's thread (or is it vernon clark's, or is it sh/s?), but i've been wanting a dining room table that is like this. kind of nakashima-ish
something like this. i've got an oak danish china cabinet (with a teak accent inlay). that and some wegner chairs ... hopelessly tacky?

Bespoke coffee table :)

Why not custom furniture? My coffee table is custom made. I came across a young furniture maker a few hours away. My wife and I visited his studio and liked his style (modern industrial). We worked with him on a design that we liked and had a table made to the exact dimensions we wanted. It was neither complicated, nor particularly expensive.

I realize that Foo probably may not find a furniture maker that will fit his style, but it's perfectly reasonable advice to look at something custom made.

What's wrong with lumber yards? I own two lumber yards.
