I'm attempting to disburden myself of the majority of my books. At this point I have stacks of books on top of my bookcases, which are often 2 deep already. I don't know why anybody would want to stack their books on the floor, though. It's dirty, bad for the books and just plain stupid.

You guys are thinking about this the wrong way. Whether you keep your books on a bookshelf or stacked up on the floor, you could just as easily be accused of trying to show off your books either way. So, who gives a **** which conveys what message to which internet personality? The important questions are whether you like your books, and which is the most effective way to store them for your usage. That is how to live honeslty--not following rote rules from an angry man-child who lives in his mother's basement that condemn the use of shelving.

Your ability to miss the point remains unparalleled as you enter your fifth consecutive month with the ugly apartment you've fashioned for 15 grand.

I pointed this out previously, but people collecting certain specific books or antique books that appreciate those books for the quality of the binding or the rarity of the book are not likely to stack them.

They are unlikely to be displaying them on a bookshelf along with a wooden sign that says 'read'.

When in Paris I came across a bookstore that specialised in antiques, she had them on bookshelves and also stacked. I thought the shop was pretty cool and she allowed me to take a picture of it.

anybody else have "the book of big boobs"? I'm trying to integrate literature that is more in line with my interests as I pursuit honest living.

My girlfriend got this for me as a gift several years ago. I was delighted, but then I figured I wasn't really going to display it on my coffee table all the time so I returned it.

So, you eschew bookshelves, toilets, and other such tasteless, middle-class, middle-brow furnishings?

No one said it was déclassé, middle-brow (interior deco is by definition middle-brow anyway; this is true for mine, yours and everyone else) or whatever. I also care very little about "honest living", I just think most/nearly all bookshelves are ugly and badly integrated in interiors, especially in smal apt so I think you should use a more minimal solution (like fully filled -hence invisible- sapiens).

Bounder: I don't live in a studio some real estate asshole called a loft, I live in a loft. it's not about the space but the fact that there are no divisions inside the place. In other words I can put books anywhere and people coming to my place are bound to see them, I don't care as the apt is by definition private, the outside is public. BTW nothing wrong with a studio, space is overrated but it requires very careful planning to avoid cluttering the space so pruning is even more important with small apartments.

Very true. We are all the sort of person who buys their own furniture.

It doesn't matter if you buy it, have someone buy it or inherit it, interior deco isn't classical music, it will never be highbrow, it's an art of living thing. Of course this isn't a problem in itself, highbrow doesn't mean good.

Isn't SH's point about honest living that homes should please their occupants and that when they are designed to represent the occupants in a manner that is intended to please others they are dishonest? If Foo didn't give a whit about what people thought but enjoyed the outcome, SH would probably give him the thumbs up for living how he wants to live (while still condemning how fugly it is, because he's still SH and foo does have an ornamental napoleon candle, a cock and balls glass water pipe (nee "vase") and urban outfitters wall balls).

Of course, that would never happen because Foo is at worst an attention whore and at best someone who likes to rattle the cage, hence this thread. This thread is of course playing out in the only way it could have which is a gladiator battle between Foo and SH for the enjoyment of both the combatants and a number of byestanders. It wouldn't surprise me if Foo and SH are role-players who get beers after work like Wile E. Coyote and Sam Sheepdog.

Who's the sheepdog and who's the coyote? And who's the roadrunner?
