I am in real estate development. There is a plethora of info on this site, I recommend reading through it and I can answer any specifics beyond that. http://astudentoftherealestategame....whove-landed-jobs-with-top-real-estate-firms/. To answer your second question simply, I would say no. ARGUS is used for cash flow producing assets (which developments are not), and almost exclusively used in office investing. May help get your foot in the door and show you're committed, but not necessary for most jobs (and can be learned quite quickly on the job).

Good luck.

I'm in Healthcare Real Estate Development and ARGUS is used extensively on the acquisitions side. They also have models that can be used for development, we use a proprietary excel model for development deals.

From talking to some of my colleagues that do this type of work, my impression is that RED is very difficult to break into at the moment. A few people I know that worked for private developers, big A&E firms, etc. doing RED related work were laid off post-crash and ended up moving on to lower paying public sector jobs after long searches. These folks have impressive resumes, 5-10+ years of experience, and went to top graduate schools.

When the economy improves a bit more I'd imagine it will be easier to break in.
