I recently got relocated by my company and the deal was that I'm on the hook for the relocation fees if I leave before 2 years. So I signed the contract & got relocated. I asked for estimates on the relocation amounts, but they said they wouldn't provide that. So months later I find out:

2 months of furnished apartment = $15k!
Relocation Costs = $16k!
Bonus = $9k

The bonus I have no problem with the bonus, but 2 months of rent is $15k?? Also, I moved a bed, a desk and closet full of clothes and it comes out to be $16k?? How the hell is that possible?

16K is quite possible, however if you were in a 7.5K/month Mass apt you'd have noticed.

Ouch, what ****** healthcare/biotech firm are you working for? On a side note, don't leave before 2 years.

where did you move to/ from? i've relo'ed twice. both from LA. Once to Denver, the other time to Phoenix. The cost of living is substantially less in both destinations compared to other prominent US cities, but my relocation estimates were still around $16k each. Also, I was given 1 month furnished apt., and 1 month rental car.

though def. on the high side, it doesn't sound too ridiculous.

for comparison, i moved 1000 miles, furniture volume about a 2 BR apartment (actually less), came out to be ~12k. graebull movers. although i think that price includes a car (transported inside the cargo).

250$ a day for a serviced apartment esp in boston IS NOT expensive.... .think of it as a suite hotel. (coincidentally i stayed for a number of months in cambridge (UK not MA) , 7k USD a month)

your numbers are not unreasonable.

we're only on the hook for 1 year, however.

edit: if you leave, i assume it'll be on your terms, which means you will have found employment elsewhere. in which case: get yourself fired!

Most I've gotten was about $30K (what company gave) - luckily never had to spend more than $5K to move since I tend to minimize and throw out/sell crap.

And yeah, prorated = good.

If I leave after 1 year, I only have to pay back 50%. But that's still $20k.
