anyone have good experience with clip-on/slide-on type collar bar?

i'm thinking of trying a collar bar ...
but i don't think i want to go with the safety pin type

i think i am going to end up messing up the collar trying to put the pin in and take it out
or just end up pricking myself and bleeding all over my shirt

if anything, i'd want a straight bar with the screw tip .. or just the slide-on/clip-on type

but i've seen some mention that the clip-on bar tends to move around
wondering if anyone has any positive experience using the slide-on collar bar or if i should just steer clear of it

I have a nice 14K yellow gold collar bar made by Tiffany & Co. that I have no trouble with at all. It stays exactly where I put it. I would think the quality would have more to do with its functionality more than any other factor.

haven't seen collar bars in stores .. but then again i haven't really been looking before yesterday either tough to judge the quality over the internet .. without at least several authentic user reviews that's why i'm making this thread to ask good to know about the tiff&co bar ... although it's probably too pricey for me to just "experiment" with

I picked one up from J. Press that works well. It is also likely quite a bit less expensive than the Tiffany version.

My father gave me one of the slide-on bars a few months ago when I finally started wearing a tie to work every day; I also frequently wear a push-through collar pin. The slide ons are okay, but it all depends on the type of collar you want to wear it with. I've tried wearing it with a club collar only to find that it slips off almost immediately: shirts with larger collars, or collars that are closer together, pose little problem. I've also found that a stiffer, starchier cloth works better than a softer oxford: The clips on the end of the slide-on bars are sturdy, but prying them out to get the collar of the shirt on always leaves me worrying about snapping the metal. I much prefer the straight bars: I've had my tailor sew small, buttonhole-esque holes in the collars of the shirts I wear with a collar bar so that I'm not constantly poking holes in my collars, and I've found that this works very well. One last piece of advice: if you're going to buy a collar bar at all, buy a quality one: those ones on the Broderick site are cheap, prone to breakage, and smaller than they look, and the plating rubs off onto lighter-colored collars.
