Anyone else have their shoe size go up after age 40

I've worn size 9.5-10 sized shoes for quite awhile and over the last 6 months noticed that several pairs of shoes are uncomfortable due to less room in the toebox. At first, I thought it was just random but as it happened consistently I took notice.

I dug around online and found a handful of articles saying that after 40 your feet don't grow, but the tendons/ligaments start to stretch out a bit and thus it's not uncommon for shoe sizing to go up.

Anyone else experience this sort of issue? It's totally annoying as I have several pairs of nice shoes that are likely going to end up on B&S with a ton of life left in them...

Yes. I'm 41 and recently my feet have become wider. Not to the point where my shoe size has changed, but enough so that some of my more narrow lasted shoes are no longer comfortable. It's a fairly recent development as some of these shoes were only purchased two years ago.

There was a poll a year or so back on AAAC about this. Many of us selected yes.

I was a 9.5B\C for much of my life. In my early 40's it started to change in both directions and now I am up to a solid 10D and have been for a number of years. But still hotter than a 4 peckered billy goat in a forest fire so yes it is your feet that go first. I can't remember what goes after that though.....

Ugh.

They should teach this sort of thing in High School so you don't buy 12+ nice pairs of shoes to only have to flip half of them a few years later on B&S!!!

This topic was brought up by knowledgeable shop salesman while I was visiting buday shoes in Budapest. I asked her why this was the case and she suggested their might be a correlation between a wider boot and weight gain

in my late teens I lost 15-20 lbs over a summer at which point my existing shoes felt about a width looser

Have any of you noticed a similar correlation?

Depends on the person. Some people's change, others do not. My dad is 65, and his shoe size hasnt
t changed since 18.

Find now at age 40+ I need a wider fitting in general, but my basic shoe size hasn't otherwise changed.
