1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

Equally comfortable in English and in French, German is coming along, and I realize I had underestimated his skills in that language. Was recently confronted to Italian while on vacation, nothing a soccer ball couldn't fix! [IMG]

    Multilingual kids are so amazing.

a couple of friends had a trilingual daugther. The mother is German, the father is French, they met and get married in NYC and then came back to Europe to live in Geneva, so the girl spoke french, english and german at 3 years old. The funny thing was that she only had heard german from her mother and maybe her grandmother... So when I came and talked german to her she watched me with big big eyes.... and then she, as her mother said, felt in love with me.. she wanted to see me, asked to go visit me all the time etc...

I guess it was because I was the only one that spoke the same "secret language" she shared with her mother [IMG]

I am a poliglot I speak 5 languages, French, English, German, Italian and Spanish and also understand the Swiss dialect, but I learned most languages being an adult. I imagine for a multilingual child is like having several mother tongues.

I was THIS close to being Dr. Manhattan, but I decided that the "wearing pants versus being virtually omnipotent" argument was just too much of a tradeoff. I chose pants and now the world laughs with me, and not at me.

Snoopy in his WWI Flying Ace persona. I've always liked Snoopy's ability to rise above any surrounding chaos and strife and still enjoy himself, albeit in a somewhat Walter Mitty like fashion.
The avatar is supposed to animate but for some reason I can't get it to run.

We find the same thing with our son, he is very interested in people who can speak French to him, as he has fewer opportunities to speak that language outside of school and home. We were recently in France and Monaco, and we got to meet a lot of people, as he would find a way to start conversations with strangers. Extremely social kid, don't know who he gets it from.

My new avatar is William of Occam. From Wikipedia:

Occam's razor (sometimes spelled Ockham's razor) is a principle attributed to the 14th-century English logician and Franciscan friar William of Ockham. The principle states that the explanation of any phenomenon should make as few assumptions as possible, eliminating, or "shaving off," those that make no difference in the observable predictions of the explanatory hypothesis or theory. The principle is often expressed in Latin as the lex parsimoniae ("law of parsimony" or "law of succinctness"):

I liked the principle and wanted to change my old avatar.

Do you speak Italian fluently? I always get excited when I "meet" other people that do, besides me.

Latest is a scene from Point Blank with Lee Marvin. One of the most badass scenes I've seen ever - Angie Dickinson beats on him with her purse and hands for about 45 seconds while he just stands there. She falls down from exhaustion and then he just walks over to sit on the couch and watch TV or something. I tried to make an animated version but it was too big to use as an avatar... but here is a version:

picture of an old woman smoking a cigar that I took in Hoi An. I think she was blind, she seemed completely oblivious to my presence while i stood there snapping her 4 feet away. [IMG]
