I really don't like black shoes. I'd say about 90% of the time, I'm wearing brown shoes. Obviously black shoes are a staple and you need a few pairs, but they are so uninteresting that I generally just get a wholecut or cap toe.

give me a nicely patina'ed brown shoe every day of the week with both grey and navy.

I can't be alone on this, but I'm sure I will get

a bit

This was an early SF meme. I don't know how many agree with you now but around 2004-2006, it was close to universal.

With brogueing, I have no issue with black shoes.

All that broguing is a bit camp, isn't it?

Correct. Interesting that this question has come up again. Edward Green tell me that most of the shoes they have been selling since the Credit Crunch are black with dark brown coming second. One of the staff joked that they could stay in business selling only Chelsea in black! Mood of the times?

I am still in the "black is boring" camp and love the character not only of brown shoes but all non black colours.

I love black shoes even if most mine have great patinas...

You can ask for a dark grey nearly black and that is a great colour with more depth than black...

The same for a very deep burgundy patina..

I'm with you 100%. I own 3 pairs of black shoes as staples, the rest (20 or more pairs) are all browns/ tans etc. I find that the black can kill any shade lighter than dark navy or charcoal.

And my eye goes straight to the nicely patinated brown piece of furniture in the background. Are there shoes in your photo? Can't actually see them.

That brown leather couch has zero patina. It is about 6 months old. I might put some renovateur on it soon.

Why would you be wearing anything else?

I don't particularly love them myself. I much prefer browns. But I don't dress particularly formally - I virtually never wear a suit, and when I do it's for a social situation, where I'm usually dandifying a bit anyways. I really like brown shoes, always have, even pre-SF.

I would like to own a pair of black chelseas but haven't built up the courage to pull the trigger yet.
