So, I'm going through a bit of a pre-midlife crisis and have decided to start investing a little in shoes.

As Oscar Wilde said 'every man needs an occupation'. I'm not much of a smoker so shoes will have to do.

I have a vague idea of what I'm after but would love the input of some of the forum's more discerning characters.

I'm primarily interested in the English tradition of shoe making (if it's good enough for Prince Charles!). I already own a pair of Edward Green and will be purchasing a pair of Crockett & Jones soon.

A few questions to start with...

1. Who are the best shoe makers? (I know this is subjective, but hey). Brands?
2. English, American, Italian, Spanish?
3. Any great reads on the subject?
4. I live on the East Coast (USA) - what stores should I be stalking?
5. How do I make sense of the lingo - shell cordovan etc.
6. Any serious collectors out there? How many pairs do you have? How do you store them? Where did you buy them? How much was your most expensive pair? Have you ever bought a pair that were too nice to wear?

That's about it for now!

Leffot (posts here) may be a good place to start.

The answer to your questions is this: just start buying shoes. Most of the pleasure is derived from the hunt and ultimate satisfaction of a good choice. Just make sure they come with bags & boxes.

Now go do et!
