Any One for a Scotch?

    Thanks. I think it was that issue of Wine Spectator from a year or two ago that was dedicated to Scotch (scotch was the cover story) that suggested L16 was "less harsh" in the smokey, peaty Islay category, so that's where I got that idea.

    Yes, I'm glad to have them both open at once.

    Speaking of tasting/nosing in general, I am confused about the deep breaths of whiskey I see tasters doing - if I put my nose into a glass (even at bottle strength of ~40%) and take a deep inhale, my nose gets burned up and very quickly I lose the aromas - in fact, I only get a few deep inhales of L16 before I can't smell the smoke anymore. Are the tasters I see taking much, much shallower inhales when their nose is buried in the glass, or do I have an unusually sensitive nose ?

    Oogie and L16 are almost always open at my place. Those and Laphroig CS are the only three Islays in my "permanent" rotation.

    What glasses are you using? And yes, shallow inhales, not huffs.

    Well, it weakens/flattens the flavors. If you want that, do it. If not, don't. ;)

    Generally, heat releases more/specific "aroma molecules". Think of when you warm a meal. It smells more intensely when it's warm, doesn't it? (this is why you shouldn't cook things longer than necessary -- there is a limited supply of "aroma molecules", and whenever you smell something, a little is lost; other than that, for texture reasons, but that's another topic)
    Think of ice cream. It's cold but it still tastes sweet and intense (but it normally doesn't smell like a freshly baked pie or something, right?). It's made of lots of fat and sugar, because they need to compensate the dulled sense of taste/restricted release of "aroma molecules". However, if you let it melt and get to room temperature, most ice cream tastes overly (unpleasantly) sweet.
    It's the same with liquids. Some are better consumed chilled because it smoothes out some unwanted flavors (e.g. beer or white wine), others don't benefit at all. Ultimately, it comes to personal taste.

    Anyway, I think foodguy could chime in with a more knowledgeable and correct explanation.

    I am using a fairly wide, very spherical red wine glass. Some proper whiskey glasses are on their way :)

    I drink whisky out of Glencairn glasses, my Reidel Sommeliers XO Cognac glass, and various other things. But I keep coming back to these wonderful tumblers my father gave me. They're just perfect for me, with wonderful cut glass rims.

    Dude, the glass is totally broken! :p Nice pic, but the bottle needs to contrast a little more from the backround, imo.
    The Riedel looks great. How thin are they (how many have you already destroyed)?
    Speaking of glasses, could you take a picture of your cocktail/Martini glasses, please?

    I actually don't have cocktail glasses that I really love. My Riedel Vinums are my every day glasses, but they are too big for most cocktails at 5 oz. I also particularly like these (I swear) Grey Goose glasses that they gave away for a short time (especially the few that had cut glass rims, not all did). And I have some other glasses I have picked up at various times. I love the shape of the Riedel Vinum Extreme cocktail glasses, but they are like 7 oz or something ridiculous like that. The Sommeliers Cognac glass is really thin. But I have only broken one Riedel -- a Vinum Pinot Noir that I bought myself when I was like 15 (I thought it was beautiful). Haven't broken one since. My father has some Riedels that he got when my parents married that are even thinner than the current Som series. I love them but they are insane thin.

    I'd take a pick of my glasses but I'm away from home for a few months. Have a few kicking around on Imageshack:

    My cocktail glasses have like a 45° angle and a huge surface. They spill very easily. :mad:
