Char #4 on Smith Street in Brooklyn has a great selection of bourbons/whiskies. The Dram Shop on 9th Street in Park Slope has a good selection too, and is reasonably priced. Decent burgers too. Hell, I'd be game for a meet up there if anyone is interested.

Anybody tried Lismore? I got it for $22 at my local... I usually get Tomatin as my 'cheap scotch'. I tried them back to back and I think I actually prefer the Lismore a bit more.

I'm a fan. 18 is really nice, but very spendy.

If you can find the Yamazaki 12, I've seen it go for as cheap as $32.

Opinons will vary, but I bought a bottle of each and preferred the 12 by a fairly large margin..

Seldom drink anything but wine these days but had occasion to finish an evening with friends and a bottle of 1966 Old Pulteney. Briny/salty! Mild.

Spent a week in Japan and had some fabulous whiskies:

Highland Park 25 (for, I swear, something like 1,500 Y)
    Hibiki 21
A special edition Karuizawa (yummy, thanks ama!)
A special edition of Royal Lochnagar (RL is one of my faves)
An old...I think 34 yo expression of Port Ellen (one of the best whisky experiences ever)
    A special Yamazaki (I think)

Tokyo is an incredible city for scotch. Truly incredible. Every half-decent bar has great whisky. The below is about a third of the scotch selection at the FABULOUS Shinanoya store in Shinjuku. They had whiskies in up to 44 y.o expressions, all the independent bottlers, the complete Flora and Fauna series, everything. It was better than a candy store.

    I already miss Tokyo.
