the safest choice (and most obvious) is to take it to/ask your dry cleaner

My girlfriend accidently got ballpoint ink all over the sleeve of one of my button-downs. . .

--------> Google

Nail Polish remover took it almost totally out. Then I put some oxyclean on it and washed it. Good as new.

Hairspray, but make sure it won't discolor the sweater first.

Google it. I had to remove a stain from something once, simple dawn liquid detergent soaked onto the stain for a few hours work (too a few attempts). There's stronger stuff like WD40 that works too. For example: http://www.cashmereconnoisseur.blogspot.com/ If your sweater disintegrates as a result, it's not my fault.. you've been warned... use your head.

If you are going to use WD-40 (which works very well), I recommend immediately following it up with Dawn to get all the WD-40 out.
