Can anyone recommend a quality desert/chukka boot with goodyear construction? Love the style, hate throwing a pair away every year and would prefer to resole if possible. Thank you.

Off the top of my head (and all Made in USA, if that matters)...

Alden:

White's:

BTW, AFAIK, Goodyear Welt isn't the only type that can be resoled. Rancourt makes some Blake Stitched Chukkas worth checking out. I'm sure there are others.

Fantastic shoes, thanks for the recommendations. I'm not familiar with White's but it looks like they make fine shoes. I had a nice pair of Blake stitched Oxfords but had a bad experience with the only cobbler near me with a Blake machine; the potential for $500 mistakes make me hesitant to go that route. Thanks for your thoughts, though.

Good looking shoe, but it seems that stitchout would provide less water resistance than a Goodyear construction. Can you speak to that at all? Thanks for the recommendation.
Not sure what that means. They say elsewhere that all of their shoes are Goodyear welted.

White's is one of a number (probably the original) of makers (e.g. Nicks, Wesco) who make high quality, no nonsense workboots, a number of which are geared those who fight forest fires. All three makers seem to have well-deserved and good reputations among those who use boots hard. Here's an enormous style forum thread on White's in case you're interested:

https://www.styleforum.net/threads/custom-whites-boots-thoughts.219173/

Alden makes a high quality shoe, and my bet is that White's version is at least as good in terms of quality. I have a pair of Alden Indy boots and a pair of White's Semi-dress boots - very different boots, but I'm very happy with both.

The Alden and White chukka are both built on the Barrie last, but White offers the shoe in more configurations. The Barrie last also runs a bit big, so I'd get in touch with Kyle at Baker's Boots (see link) if you're interested. He's very helpful - in addition to having a better price than White's direct, he can steer you to the right size.

It was a mistake on my part; I confused your link with another. Thanks for pointing it out.

Old thread, but I have been looking into Chukkas the past few days and stumbled upon Thursday Boot Co. I saw a post in this thread asking whether their shoe were GYW, and wanted to post a link to their FAQ page, which contains the following info:

"Goodyear welting is the gold standard method for footwear construction, and used in only the top 1% of men’s shoes. It creates a virtually waterproof seal at the insole and makes your shoes completely resoleable. In a Goodyear welt, the thread is sewn through the welt, the upper, and the insole rib. Through a separate stitch, the welt is attached to the outsole. For both of these stitching points, a lockstitch is used. While it is time intensive and requires specific machinery, it prevents the stitch from unraveling if it breaks down at any particular point in the shoe. This means that with proper care, the Thursdays you buy today will last you for years to come.
While most of our men’s line features Goodyear welt construction, we also use Stitchout (The Scout), Storm Welt (The Explorer) and Veldtschoen constructions. These construction methods are also resoleable and highly water-resistant."

What is Goodyear welt construction?
