Here's what I like about SS:

-Good sized lapels
-Decent to very good button stance
-Interesting and wide range of shoulder construction. Natural, Soft, Structured, Roped, etc.
-Decent construction (Half-canvassed, some nice looking and feeling fabrics)

I don't like that they have standard working buttons, that's almost a deal-breaker, as it makes alterations a real pain.

So, given those points, are there any good alternatives to SS?

Seems like the vast majority of brands/makers in the sub 500$ category are pumping out suits and coats with too high button stance, skimpy lapels, short jackets and terrible shoulder construction.

what do u mean by short jackets? ones that would fit better on short people? (im only 5'8-5'9 w/o shoes)
i have yet to order from SS but im about to and while i like their designs, id still like to see alternative brands just for the sake of having more options

Brooks Brothers 1818 on sale is probably the only thing I can think of that comes closest in terms of quality and design. 1818 is a little more conservatively styled than what you'll find at SS though. There's also the classifieds here, where you can find some really good deals if you're patient. Aside from that, you're looking at spending more like $750-1000 to find something comparable.
