Any disadvantage to stationary vs stepping or walking lunges?

I am curious whether doing stationary lunges, where you step with one leg, go up and down several times, then switch legs are significantly less effective than stepping each time and alternating legs? I find the former make it easier to maintain proper form and balance and are also easier on my knees.

And, on the subject of leg exercises that don't involve massive weights, will substituting 15-20 min of very hard riding on a stationary bike once a week for lunges or leg presses help get my legs and glutes more chiseled? Or even at difficult settings is it good for cardio only?

Lunges are the same.

And you know what the answer is for leg hypertrophy....

Although sprinters get leg hypertrophy from 10s all out, 4 min rest. So if you do that type of loading for a few hours a day you might see results

Well, I wont likely see results like that, given I don't run (knees) and only allocate about 45-60min each day for the gym, so it was just a question of swapping one exercise for another, in the name of variety, and whether I'd see similar results.
