You can do Cornelius 3 in suede, or peccary.

Then it’s not dress. 🤓

Looking for some style advice. I'd like to purchase a pair of (less dressy) boots from AM. Currently doubting between the Evocatus (in a single material) and the Proteo boots. I think the Proteo is very unique, but it might be a bit too flashy. Any thoughts/advice/experiences?

I don't have any experience with either of those boots, but the EVOs would be my choice.

It is essentially the same design as EG's Galway. The Galway is EG's most popular design, and the boot most smart to casual boots are measured by.

The Proteo, as you mentioned, is unique which limits it to niche type status thereby limiting its versatility.

If you have any interest in extending the value of your shoes/boots go for the option that has the capability of pairing easily & most often.

I want to offer an alternative view.

When we buy shoes, we should also consider the relative strengths of the makers and their niche.

For AM, one of his chief strengths is making very stylish and rugged stuff. To me, if one is after a Galway / Dover / any iconic model from a specific maker, getting an “alternative” is usually a detour and longer path to the destination.

On the other hand, no one else makes Proteos / Tirolese styles like, or as well as, AM does. I would choose styles with his distinctive character 10 out of 10 times.

Fine point but your alternative presumes that the OP has the finances to purchase multiple boots.
And they will require multiple options as the distinct aesthetic that the Proteo offers is....unique.

The Evo, while a detour from the Galway, does offer superior construction to the EG, probably a leather not available from other makers (AM offers endless possibilities there), a foundation piece that is simple yet stylish, and, as mentioned (because of the simplicity) versatility.

I've got no issues with folks exploring and/or expanding their sartorial palette. I just believe that the foundation piece should be covered prior to the Warhol piece, as those tend to be the ones that make pairing easier. Additionally, I'm also considering the financial component of the purchase whereby they'd maximize utility will increasing the value.

I agree with you analysis.

As such, my recommendation for the OP would actually be EG Galway in a more conservative leather (for versatility and actual utility), and a sole option suited to his lifestyle (EG does offer a few practical options, from relatively dressy to quite rugged).

Such classic combos often appear as decent end-of-season discounts from EG’s online retailers. So the key is also to research and wait, to avoid the somewhat unnecessary MTO surcharge for an otherwise very conservative design.

Wouldn't he want the Evo option haha?
What's the Evo cost, approximately, after all charges are assessed?

Many thanks for the insights. This is exactly what I'm struggling with a bit haha.
I think I'll ultimately go for the Evo as I want something a bit dressier than the Proteo. Will try to have some fun with the leather (have wanted a boot in Baker's Russian calf for a while) and the last.
I hear you on simply buying a pair of Galways on sale somewhere. But I really like AM as a shoemaker and also appreciate his dressy/classic(/boring?) stuff. Plus, gotta love that Italian flair :)

That Italian flair, I agree, cannot be found elsewhere.

I think Baker Russian calf is not the default Russian calf at AM. He likes to use Horween harchgrain. Customers have provided (I have actually helped one of my friends to buy a piece from AA Crack and ship from the U.K. to Italy to the workshop, just to make sure his pair gets “the Aurum cut”, inadvertently giving AM some serious headache with the import documents and tax due to concurrent Brexit 😂). You can actually see it occasionally on AM’s Instagram, but I think a non-negligible surcharge applies.

For Baker Russian calf, CJ and Carmina both use it on their regular shoes without too big a surcharge. If you care about that leather, that is.

A Russian calf / cordovan combo, from any of the makers discussed, could be nice…
