@pck1 it's a vintage ilcea 'old anil' that i selected when i visited him last summer

Old anil isn't made anymore it was from a much smaller animals, the newer one that is now being made is called 'setanil' but the skin is from a larger animal.

    Thanks Meister.

I think, that the principal advantage of MTO is to try something new and personnal.

Was thinking about getting some Meccariellos or G&G/EG. Only possible drawback is the lasts. I really like the MH71/EG888, does Antonio have anything like that, in the chiseled soft square style?

And the construction for standard line and trial shoes, are they on par with G&G/EG?

Antonio can make any style you like, although his Aurum Soft Square is similar. My soft square is below from when he was developing the last. A last modification is relatively cheap too.

As for standard line compared to G&G it is a slightly different beast. G&G has the closest welt cutting I've seen and the finishing is top notch. These days Antonio's sole finishing is just as good as G&Gs with more choice of color. The welt, however, is still going to be a little thicker and more Italian in style. The trade off is that you get a hand welted shoe that is much more customize able and potentially more comfortable.

Standard line also comes in considerably cheaper than a G&G RTW. Having lived in London for a period I was confronted with the exact choice you had and ended up getting two Meccariellos.

You probably can't do a lot about your thick and fleshy feet, but to get rid of hard skin and calluses there are plenty of gadgets and products on the market. :D

If you choose aurum, does it come with a test shoe? or is the test shoe extra regardless of standard vs aurum

    It's extra regardless.

    @c&a had posted
    his suede loafer in this
    thread which
is on a soft square last
    and two months
    ago when i visited
    he showed me
    his new soft square
    last for standard
    shoes

    the standard line
    at teh minimum yes
    what @MSchapiro wrote
    has now changed
    the welt and sole
    of the standard is
    much more narrow
    (although not as
    fine as aurum)
    akin to gg

    teh leather
    for the test shoe
    is obviously
    less than eg/gg

I thought that the thickness was simply part of the style, not a negative. I have never really seen anyone else match G&G's thinness because their style is particularly thin.
