I too am interested in those special leathers he can source. Here's a question. Are those wonderful vintage leathers all aniline dyed? (Or whatever the proper terminology is.) I'm very attracted to Antonio's wine/oxblood/burgundy offerings, as they have this intangible air about them that evokes in me some sort of romantic notion I must have had at a young age of what a 'proper' man's dress shoe was. Hard to put a finger on this exactly. But anyway, his wine shades are all hand painted, right? For a really special vintage leather, should I be looking at more of a dark brown?
Paging @BColl_Has_Too_Many_Shoes. I think most are box calf but it would depend on the individual leather but I also think he can do some sort of over dye maybe? Maybe @DL120 can chime in since I think he has a pair of centurions in a vintage leather that was dyed wine. For my purposes I really like darker browns and think Antonio has a hide from my birth year which I’m leaning toward using for an Aurum order but am still hung up on what model I want.

Damn, a hide from your birth year would be really sweet! I'd love to do something special like that myself for an Aurum commission. But I guess any old hide would do.

I suppose I had it in mind that painting a special vintage leather would steal some of its charm. Or, I suppose that there wouldn't be many options for it any rate, as for example you wouldn't/couldn't paint black box calf. And that there aren't special vintage crust leathers?

yea GG pricing though, especially for handwelt...

@acapaca, is burgundy/oxblood too dark for you (vs. wine)? Right now there is an vintage burgundy on the Single MTO side for 150 euro up charge (that's my coming make up, so I don't have anything to share in terms of what it looks like)

Not necessarily too dark, and may actually be exactly what I'm looking for. I'd love to somehow get a glimpse of what it looks like. You're saying it appears on their site right now as a description of an option?

Edit: Is it the 'Aglianico'?

Wow, this is the first I'm seeing of the Fabiana. Anyone got any first hand experience, or thoughts? Intrigued! I also wonder what the material is on this pair.

Antonio is a master of obtaining almost any leather that will suit your needs. Also, arguably, has the industry's best eye for a quality leather piece. If he selects it, might as well call it an A+ hide.

Typically those older ones are baby calf anilines. Of course, he can dye them further still to provide the color that would suit you.

That said, no way I'm adding anything in terms of color to it. As @acapaca noted, the charm and allure would be gone. No reason to add anything to a perfect piece.

yup I have no idea how AM does these dungeon & dragon work to found vintage hide behind a vault kind of thing... speaking of which once my new commission comes back maybe I'll go back to the vintage dark brown imperator idea, hum...
Guess we'll see the existing project in 4 weeks... 😜

Great idea on the Imperator!

Many thanks. And...apologies, as I'm sure it's been covered many times in this thread and other places, but the special vintage pieces are supposed to be...especially buttery soft? especially tightly grained? especially prone to crease only in the finest and most elegant way? It's something to do with modern tanneries changing their practices? Or do these vintage hides come from a now-extinct breed of unicorn calves?

T

This is thundermarch’s shoe, but I haven’t seen him detail a post yet
Good to know! Perhaps I will copy another of his styles then (with the Thunderboot from Winson on the way). That is a really, really attractive shoe. I wonder if it's simply a pingrain, as I can see in the leather options, or if it's some kind of pebbled suede sort of thing.
