The quote is from Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) and in this case it refers to the latest
victim of the "The Curse of Union Square": Ghurka, purveyor of "travel bags and leather goods"
closed its' San Francisco "flagship store". The Post Street retailer hosted an elegant Style
Forum Meetup in January 2014 , which, if I recall, included a bartender doling out good Scotch.
I am no retailing maven, but there seems to be an unusually high number of vacant stores in
the exclusive Union Square shopping district of San Francisco. This has persisted even though the Bay Area
has arguably the best local economy in the US and a vibrant tourist trade. Manhattan, where I spent
two weeks in June 2015 and is comparably rich, exhibits a much lower vacancy rate. Comments?

I liked that store, although I had never found anything in it that I considered purchasing. I think it occupied a very narrow niche in the market and I doesn't surprise me that revenue couldn't keep up with the rent. Much more surprising to me is the news that the large Prada store at Post and Grant is closing and that Prada is leaving San Francisco altogether.
