Okay, I worked on exporting and importing the database, tried some stuff the Ikonboard guys suggested, and nothing really worked. I could get it working in mySQL which would probably fix the problem, but I can't get it to export the existing database and then import it to the SQL one, so we wouldn't have any of the old posts, members, etc., basically a clean slate. I am basically at the limits of my knowledge, so at the insistence of many here, I will ask for your help, if you want to give it. I finally set up a paypal account, and Ikonboard wants $149 a year for their premier support which should resolve this issue and hopefully get the board running on the newest version of the software with the faster database etc. Pretty good price actually, but I can't afford it right now. So if you want to help out, it would be greatly appreciated, whatever you can give. My Paypal account (www.paypal.com) is [email protected] . Thanks everyone.

Wow, that's great. I come back from the gym and there's already money in the account. Thanks everyone- maybe I'll make a "contributing members" group or something to thank contributors. I don't know if people want their donations made public (you never know), so I'll ask people before I do that.

J, What database are you currently using that you would like to export to mySQL? I can probably help, and I would be happy to do so free of charge, so long as the board is returned to its usual state. Please email me at [email protected] if you would like help. - Dave

I moved some active topics from the regular clothing forum to here so people can get answers on their questions. I think that forum has just outgrown the limits of the database system so it is set to read only at the moment. I'm hoping to get the ikonboard guys on this today. We'll see.

Thanks again everyone for your donations.

A very helpful guy from Ikonboard is messing with the forum today so things may look and behave a little differently. In addition, I may have to prune down the board to a lot less posts, and I'll have to see what he says about which ones to get rid of. However if there is any information you are really interested in keeping, I suggest you copy and paste it to a text file on your own hard drive or print it out. If someone could figure out how to dump posts to text files that could later be reimported that would be great, but I don't know how.

The board may go down from time to time while he works on it, so expect delays.

Anyway I won't be deleting a bunch of posts without letting people know so there is some time to do that. Thanks everyone.

All right, I'm starting to prune off old topics. I'll start in the less popular forums but I am probably going to have to get into the clothing one pretty soon. Please, if you want to save any info from old posts, get it now. Sorry about this, but the Ikonboard tech guy says there's no way the board will convert and continue working with so many topics.

J:

Is the issue too many topics or is the isue too many bytes of data?

If the latter perhaps its a good idea to get rid of the many pictures that exist in posts. Especially in the older posts. Additionaly it would be a good idea if there were some guidelines in the quoting of other posts so as to minimize the amount of data that is repeated unnecessarily.

For people archiving topics, the easiest way is probably to click on the "Print this Topic" link at the bottom of the page. This will load all of the pages in that topic as one page without a lot of extra graphics and formatting. You can then save the html file on your computer.

I'm trying to get answers on this stuff. Almost none of the images are hosted on the site so that isn't really an issue. The quoting thing is to some degree but the main thing is the number of replies, which is really the point of a good discussion. In any case, after we get it running on mySQL it will be able to handle anything we can throw at it. The problem right now is getting it to import as much as possible into the new database so we don't have to start from a clean slate. I'm trying to see if I can get it to import just the newest 10000 posts or something like that and then set up the old database as read only so people can still search it. It is just overloaded way beyond safe capacity according to the ikonboard guy.

justbrowsing, good call. That definitely cuts down the clutter and displays it quickly. If I could only write a script to do that to all the topics... Sometimes I really do wish I were geekier.

Well, I think I may have it fixed. Let's try it out and see what happens.

Weird, I'm back to my "old self" again. It has logged me in under the other account. Anyway, obviously let me know if anything is still acting weird. We are now up and running in 3.0.2a on mySQL. Yay.

That was fast. Good job, J.
