http://www.gievesandhawkes.com/shop/...g/jackets.html

I clearly have a lot to learn about dress sense. I have read quite a few threads on what is different about a sports jacket and blazer to a suit jacket but please can someone tell me what's different about some of the stand alone jackets being sold by people like Gieves and Hawkes in the link above to a suit jacket that's a big no no to wear without the matching trousers. In other words if I wore one of the jackets in the link, what's stopping people thinking I'm wearing a suit jacket with the jeans or chinos I may have on? Thanks in advance.

Please delete this double post. Link appeared to be broken but obviously wasn't.

Speaking only of the solid colored jackets in your link (pinstripes should absolutely never be worn as odd jackets) most people will recognize them as suit jackets simply because the buttons are not brass, silver, or some other kind of non-dark button (some make exceptions for dark horn).

Those more conscious of dress standards will recognize they are suit jackets because of the cloth and the hip pockets. There is more controversy about hip pockets, but many favor patch pockets because of their obvious informality (patch breast pocket are equally popular on odd jackets). Blazers and/or other odd jackets are frequently, though not always, made from a cloth other than worsted wool (e.g. hopsack, tweeds, etc.)

As long as you have use non-dark buttons the vast majority of people will assume a solid navy jacket is a blazer whatever its origins.
