NEWPORT BEACH -- A man killed in the high-speed crash of a $300,000 Ferrari has been identified as the mixed martial arts industry figure who went by the name "Mask."

Charles "Mask" Lewis, the co-founder of apparel company 'TapouT,' died early Wednesday morning when his rare Ferrari crashed into a light pole at the end of what police say may have been a street race.

TapouT released this statement:

"It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we must regretfully confirm the passing of our beloved friend, brother and co-founder Charles "Mask" Lewis following a car accident that occurred last night.

We are currently in the process of setting up a memorial service in his honor and will release more details as they become available.

Many thanks to all for the outpouring of blessings and well-wishes during this incredibly difficult time."
An officer in a patrol car was going north on Jamboree when he noticed two vehicles, a 2004 Ferrari Modena and a 1977 white Porsche coupe, swerving out of control, Newport Beach Lt. Craig Fox said.

The Ferrari lost control, hit a curb and crashed into a light pole, which toppled onto the car, crushing the front portion, said Newport Beach Police Lt. Steven Shulman.

The impact of the crash split the vehicle in two and sent debris flying onto the roadside.

The Porsche stopped momentarily but then sped away, Fox said.

The driver of the Porsche, Jeffrey Kirby, 51, was taken into custody after officers spotted the vehicle moments later.

He and a female passenger were reportedly walking away from the car at the time.

Kirby was being held on $1 million bail while facing charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. A possible court appearance was scheduled for Thursday.

Newport Beach resident Lynn Marie Nabozny, 32, was arrested for public intoxication, Fox said. She was released and will not be formally charged, he added.

A woman thrown from the Ferrari was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana suffering from broken bones, including a broken arm, Fox said. She was listed in stable condition.

Hours after the crash, the front portion of the luxury Italian sports car could be seen resting against a hillside several feet away with its lights still functioning.

The Ferrari Modena has a top speed of about 186 mph.

Pictures of the crash look pretty gruesome.

not shocked, i've seen exotics drive down that road at high rate of speeds, acting like douchebags and driving way too dangerously. not saying it happened here with the ferarri driver but I wouldn't doubt it.I've probably seen this car drive fast as **** on this road in fact, lots of assholes just going about 100 in a 50 to flaunt their cars.

No performance training + public road + exotic = teh failz.

But seriously, you cannot tap the potential of a Modena on a public street, nevermind safely. That is what track days are for.

It is sad for the families involved. Having said that these guys are jerk-offs for driving like this. I mean what's a 51 yr. old still trying to prove. It's pathetic and dangerous for those of us just trying to get home.

Sadly another Ferrari bites the dust at the hands of someone who simply can't drive one.

It's of course sad to hear that he died like that...
The real douche though is the guy in the Porsche who didn't offer assistance and left the scene of the accident.

Why is this worthy of a thread?

It's a car crash. They happen all the time. And it's not even an Enzo or something, just a five year old Ferrari 360. Might as well post every time someone crashes a Honda.

I'm only questioning why a 2004 Ferrari was racing a 1977 Porsche. Unless the Porsche had been modified, why would this even be a race?
