What do you guys think of this collar and tie combo on Phil Lipoff, the new anchor at the NYC ABC affiliate:

lipoff2.jpg

I think the ultra-wide spread is a bit much and it is a poorly-shaped tie knot for it-it should be more more profoundly triangular with more width at the top of the knot. When I saw this I actually found it quite jarring and couldn't wait to report it to the Style Forum Suit Mafia. I think an ultra-wide spread can be used if used correctly, but I found this to be an abject failure. Thoughts?

I don't think the knot's that bad, but the collar doesn't fit him well. It looks like it is either too big in circumference or sits too low on his neck. A bit too flashy for a news anchor, too.

. I personally think that wide spreads are overplayed at this point. I prefer a medium spread and a soft collar. It is a different look, but one that is more pleasing to my eye.

"Profoundly triangular"? "abject failure"? Woop Woop Woop the over-dramatic alarm is going off. Or should I say the "profoundly over-dramatic" alarm? Or maybe the "patently absurd" alarm. I haven't decided yet. Maybe I'm "abjectly undecisive".

BTW, I think it looks fine.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, we ***** and moan all day about how nobody wears suits anymore, and as soon as somebody does, we jump all over them because their tie isn't triangular enough. That's a bunch of BS in my book.

reminds me of this thread

you like starting topics that criticize guys on tv....didnt you also start that Apprentice thread?

Odoreater's point is a valid one. One thing this forum can create are fashion critics who suddenly are armed with some smidgen of sartorial knowledge and go on witchhunts to out those who arent following the "rules"

I think that any businessman or professional who neess to dress the part should dress well. But if you are going to be on television, particularly if you are an anchorman where the camera is going to be fixed on the top third of your body in a close-up you owe it to yourself to learn how to dress exceptionally well or at least find someone to advise you to. I have seen dozens of posts here where someone has posted a picture of someone in the media (and no...not all by me...not even close) and people have made comments about the outfit, for better or for worse. Why should this be an issue or a problem?

but if you showed this anchorman's picture around, 99% of people WOULD think he's dressed well. It's just that this forum sees things differently since there's more informed opinions here, but it doesnt mean that this particular fellow is dressed poorly. If he were parading around saying he was the best dressed newscaster, them your beef with his presentation would be more valid.

and I have been noticing more newsguys dressing more 'out there' (compared to, say, a lawyer or banker)....as if they're developing their own "look", for better or worse. but at least they arent wearing 'business casual', and if anything, are getting fancier.

Hear, hear.

I think he looks very well put together. And, just to be clear, the OP thinks the tie knot should have *more* width?

Dude, it's not like I am standing outside the TV studio with a sign saying "Phil Lipoff-STOP WEARING SPREAD COLLARS!!!!

But fair enough point, GetSmart, and in the future I will expect you to respond to each and every post someone makes on this forum regrading the way a man in the public eye dresses with the same level of intensity. You are going to be very busy.

Exactly. If MrDaniels had said "his tie looks like it could be better" or "I personally don't like that particular knot with that collar" it would be one thing. But to say that he is an "abject failure" is, as I said in my original post, just overly dramatic.

Yes, critiquing everything put before up is, to some degree, is hard to resist.
Something about the collar jars for me. It seems a half size too large. It also reminds me of the look a polo has when used with a tie, by some experimental/progressive types.
It seems the wideness of the tie is emphasizing the extreme spread. Just too distracting, especially for a report about some poor sod getting their brains re-sited, which is what we should be focused on.
