An overall suggestion regarding watch posts...

There have been a number of recent posts regarding watches. The short answer is a thin gold time-only watch on a leather strap is the proper choice when wearing a suit. Your steel sports watch on a bracelet is OK with jeans or maybe even with a sport coat providing it fits under your shirt cuff.

As a fan of fine timepieces as well as fashion, I enjoy participating on the various fora for each passion. To those who are looking for more detailed information, suggestions, reviews, rants, raves, etc., my suggestion is to look into some of the watch sites. A few that come to mind include:

The above sites provide some valuable information as well as interesting banter. I would not, however, as them if your tie matches your shirt or suit.

Timezone is a great source of information, but it has its downsides. The biggest problem is that people are too rah-rah about their designated favorite brand. I know, this sounds ridiculous from someone who unabashedly loves IWC, but I openly discuss my disgust with what they've done to their watches. On Timezone, it often seems as if the the brand being discussed in a particular forum can do no wrong.

Styleforum discussions about watches may not be as deeply informed, but they do have the advantage of being more objectively-minded.

I agree, I am on Timezone.com and I really feel that is is the watch version of The Fashion Spot. The moderators there are also big assholes.

^^^ There are also certain long-time posters that everyone follows like idiots. This is particularly bad when you're using a forum to become more informed about very expensive purchases. I blame this herd mentality for the craze over the hideously awful Hublot Big Bang.

This is at least partially because of the moderators' enforcement of the ban on "outside disputes." I have noticed they will block negative posts under this banner with some regularity.

Of course, in addition, the very nature of each "brand forum" is that it will attract "dittoheads" for that brand.

I find it amusing that they allow sponsorships from dealers and specific watch brands; but, you can't talk about any dealers because it isn't "fair" to those that are a sponsor. I asked why we can then talk about all watch brands and not only those who sponsor the board.

Of course that got deleted and a private message that I should be "more respectful".

Also if you mention anything in passing about something that isn't a watch it is "take it to private messages."

I recently stopped going to TimeZone any more because of one of the posts in the Lifestyle & Entertainment section. Someone asked a question about a gun and the post was deleted because, "There are more appropriate forums to get that technical information." When someone else posted that the same could be said about cars, movies, restaurants, etc., that post was also deleted. If you don't want posts about firearms, fine. I can respect that. But don't try to feed me a bunch a b.s.

I also wasn't thrilled when my messages to a couple of moderators about having a get-together post stickied went completely unanswered. I guess I'm not one of the right people for that forum.

Anyways, the reason TZ is what it is now is because every brand specific forum is moderated by the respective brand and their corporate minions.

The Hublot phenomenon is specifically attributable to one individual, IMO. He danced all over the line promoting the brand when he was a moderator. He's now a paid employee. Big surprise.

TZ is somewhat beholden to the manufacturers because they get inside info, freebies and access to insider tours; all of which they make available to TZ posters. So I understand the desire to be respectful when posting complaints about brands. They do go overboard though. The above mentioned mod really pissed off IWC with a few childish stunts. They asked me to take over as the IWC forum moderator when he gave it up. I wisely refused and pretty much never went back after another month or so. Five years of posting on TZ is enough for a lifetime.

FWIW, Mike Sandler is a much nicer guy in person.
