And what does that sign on the far left of the last picture say? That's got to be either one of the worst . . . or best . . . photo editing jobs of all time.

I gained a great respect for the Amish while doing some consulting work at Goshen (IN) Rubber Co several years ago. There is a heavy population of Amish in that part of Indiana, and you are just as likely to see a horse drawn carriage as you are a car. Even the fast food joints have hitching posts.

The Amish are pure artisans in their crafts. Also, they make tasty vittles and are genuinely nice folks.

An electrician (go figure) at Goshen Rubber Co was an Amish expat. As I understand it, everyone in that community has a choice as they reach adulthood to continue living that lifestyle or to do their own thing in the conventional world. The electrician told me that people like him are not shunned and continue strong relationships with their families regardless of the path they choose.

They could have been in the process of being arrested and forced into the military. There was a time, not so long ago, when we had a military draft in this country. There are a few Supreme Court cases which extended conscientous objector status to various religious groups. Perhaps their group wasn't protected at the time of this photo (or maybe they were being forced to register for the draft but would be able to object if they were actually drafted).

Close. The photographs where the Amish are covering their faces relates to a court case where the Amish parents were brought to trial for truancy of their children.

Rumspringa.

There's a pretty good doc about it from a few years ago.

The scenes with the Amish teenagers partying and doing drugs is worth the price of admission alone.
